Book Review: Me And The Ugly C By Becky Dennington

She never thought it would happen to her.
But it did.
At the age of thirty-five, Becky Dennington was diagnosed with non-invasive and invasive ductal carcinoma. Breast cancer. In an instant, her life changed all because of a single word she couldn’t even bring herself to say out loud. The ugly C word.
Share in the journey of one young woman’s fight against breast cancer, the sacrifices a family makes, the heartbreak cancer leaves in its path, and the joy found along the way.

Me And The Ugly C by Becky Dennington is a book that will make you cry. Sometimes they’ll be tears of sorrow, sometimes of happiness. I didn’t expect that. After all, this is a book about a woman’s fight against cancer. Becky’s visit to the gynaecologist was supposed to be routine, but the doctor found a lump in her breast that was so small it could easily have been missed. Soon came the diagnosis: non-invasive and invasive ductal carcinoma. Breast cancer. Stage 1. Becky is about to start treatment and decides to chronicle her journey in a blog, which has now become a book, and share it with others.

We all know someone who is or has been affected by cancer, so we will all be able to relate to Becky’s story. But what most of us don’t know is what having cancer exactly means and how it affects people’s lives. In her book, Becky doesn’t hold back and tells it exactly like it is. She shares with us the most gruesome details of her treatment, describes what words like biopsy really mean, how devastating chemotherapy and radiation are for the entire body and the soul, the way she felt when she decided to cut her hair before it would all fall out, how hard the disease affected both her and her family…

And yet, despite all she went through, Becky still managed to retain her sense of humour and keep a positive attitude. There are times when she understandably cries, but the overall tone of the book is quite funny and witty. A woman who manages to face such a horrible disease with such positive spirit and even laugh about it is definitely a woman I admire and would like to know. Becky is an inspiration. Part of her strength comes from her faith. But she never becomes preachy. Instead, she discusses her faith in God in a matter-of-fact-way. It’s simply a part of her and of her journey.

It was also heartwarming to see how her family, her friends, her neighbours, her customers and even perfect strangers all rallied around her and helped her in any way they could. Me And The Ugly C is a powerful and emotional read that will help you to better understand what a person diagnosed with cancer goes through emotionally, medically and physically and prepares you to deal with it. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Me And The Ugly C by Becky Dennington is an honest true life story of a brave woman’s fight with breast cancer. The book will help you to better understand what people affected by cancer go through medically, emotionally and physically. Yet, through it all, Becky manages to keep a positive, and humours, attitude. It’s a very emotional read and one I highly recommend to anyone.
